Oak Framed Orangery and veranda

Strensall, York

Our brief was to create a beautiful oak framed orangery attached to a family house north of York.

Darren and our architect, Andrew Burningham, put their heads together and came up with a lovely design with an integrated veranda that ties it in with the rest of the house and creates welcome shade to the other living areas that previously were getting hammered by sunlight.

As it’s a south facing building, we used solar control glass to cut out a huge portion of the sun’s glare and heat gain. We revisited this one a year later and our clients were over the moon with the building and really impressed with the temperature-controlled environment we had created. Not too cold in winter and not too hot in summer – something that’s very difficult to achieve without the proper knowledge of modern building methods and materials.

The pitched lantern on the top of this orangery really adds character and, again with solar control glass, it cuts out the incredible heat gain that you would expect.

The table design was taken from an idea of Darren’s to create quality oak furniture incorporating the same rustic style timber and sweeping curved members that can be seen in our buildings, but used on a smaller scale. As we know, not everyone can afford or indeed has the space for a brand new orangery, but still would love to own a piece of beautifully designed traditional or contemporary solid oak furniture.

The mixture of naturally dried cracked timber and polished machine blackened glass really makes it stand out as a unique dining table and the benches complement nicely to create a real solid and contemporary hand made oak dining set.

The choice of having oak furniture made to accompany our new oak extensions is becoming more popular with our clients. Talk to us about what you like and we’ll be delighted to help you achieve that vision.
